Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, portrait, 4 exposures one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. Centered in the frame is a road leading into a mixture of clouds, city, and nature. To the right, city facades build up and turn over the composition at the top.

DOWN THE STREET

2013-2018 // 35MM MULTIPLE EXPOSURE // NEW YORK CITY [USA] // MEXICO CITY [MX] // BUENOS AIRES [ARG] // HONOLULU [USA]

The Down The Street works came from an idea of “rolling” the street. It was a notion born for folding a map, the way the map moves distinct parts of the city onto itself in new ways, creating new exchanges and overlaps, showing how spaces in the city though far apart are still in relation and affecting each other. This led to the exploration of rolling streets from distinct cities around the world onto each other.

The works here are from four different cities over a period of five years: New York City 2013, Mexico City 2016, Buenos Aires 2018, and Honolulu 2018.

I made a similar project shooting a roll of film while walking up 3rd Avenue in Manhattan from E15 to E125 Street. See the works here.

See diagrams and explanations of the process here.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, portrait, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. From the top left corner to just past the center in the bottom, a dark band shows a double-stripped road with two cars turned 90 degrees, rows of multiple-story houses overlaid upside down on each other, and ending in the bottom in houses turned 90 degrees. Immediately to the right of the houses are two traffic lights on a pole, also at 90 degrees to the landscape format, with both lights showing red. At the left side of the band is a snowflake star visible. At the furthest right side, there is one dark line with a multistory house, right side up. The rest of the photo is slightly faded in intensity. Showing on the right side the view down a street with highrises in the back and a leafless tree to the right. On the left side, the sky and some trees are visible at the bottom of the photo under the dark band. The colors are mostly yellow and blue.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, landscape, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. Center right is dense with city, while at the left and top part, the city seems to dissolve into the clouds. Balconies on the right side have electrical poles poking out into the city cloud-scape.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, landscape, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. The general composition is dark, but for a tubular highrise lying horizontal in the center of the work, which lights up in golden yellow. The muted scene is dominated by opaque facades and dark trees.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, portrait, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. A road leads off from the bottom towards the center over the composition, where in the far distance, a highrise rises much higher than the mountains of trees cutting it off at the bottom. In the bottom left, the road is cut open by the outline of trees and the sky as seen between buildings on a street, looking almost like a lake on the road.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, landscape, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. Buildings form an S-curve horizontally across the work. In the center, a massive building is cut open by the sky, the cut lined by trees, making a new architectural language spoken in the middle of the city.

Visual Description: Experimental 35mm multiple exposure film photography, landscape, 4 exposures, one on each side; the spinning image produces a new view of the city. At first it looks mostly like an up-side-down city, until you notice the tree lined street in the center bleeding into the buildings and sky around it. At the right edge, the end of the filmstrip burns the edge of the city into a yellow/red sun set.
